Alex Klein on Geico Ads?!?!?!?
Tuesday November 13 2007
So I’m watching the Redwings get kicked in the rear by the St. Louis Blues. And then comes a Geico Insurance ad. With Alex Klein. He’s not doing anything oboe-like. He’s not even doing anything remotely musical. But there he is, Brazilian accent and all! What’s going on!?!?!?
So I went to Youtube and searched him and couldn’t find him but I did find this.

UPDATE : Thanks to the kind reader Bautbois, here’s the ad!

cooper, i’ve discovered a very inexpensive set of 2 cd’s of vivaldi’s oboe concertos by Stefan Schilli on Naxos that is a huge bargain, you can listen to it on amazon…i highly recommend it - flawless, beautiful playing, a bit less exciting than the Klein high energy treatment but more polished, IMHO. I got lucky and found the Holliger for resale on Amazon and also bought the Nick Daniel Italian Concertos album which is truly excellent; initially, i wasn’t that impressed with Daniel’s Vivaldi, it’s a bit staid, but he got me at the very end of the third movement with his trumpet-like high register harmonic flourishes on the ritornello! And the Albinoni’s a keeper.

Hey, Cooper, is this really THE Alex Klein?? Why on earth would he be doing this? Probably not many people know his name outside of the music world: is he supposed to be an ‘ordinary’ client?
I heard some years ago that he had retired from the Chicago Orch. because of hand nerve problems but that he wanted to play again. Any idea if he has improved? That hand story broke my heart because he was my favourite living oboist and I had always hoped to hear him play someday.

I was at my car dealer earlier today getting some work, and they have an HD widescreen in the waiting room. So on comes the Alex Klein commercial, so I got up, walked toward the screen and stared at the “oboe” on the mantel…you know what? i think it’s a clarinet, but a short stubby one…definitely did not look like an oboe.

I saw it on an HDTV recently and I’m positive it’s a Royal with a low A key, which is why it looks longer than a normal oboe. I played one of these when my friend Scott and I were in college together. He actually had one of Klein’s old Royals with the low A on it. It was HEAVY!

Note what appears to be an oboe up on the mantle over his shoulder on the left side!
