The greatest 80s rock band…

Saturday August 09 2008

Driving home from the beach today, my wife and I were listening to an 80s CD I burned a week ago, and “Right Now” came on.

Me: Do you know who this is?

Wife: No.

Me: Think. It’s the greatest 80s rock band ever.

Wife: Um— Scorpions?

Me: Uh, no. Van Halen.

Wife: Never heard of them.

And she’s never even seen the original Star Wars Trilogy! How did we ever end up together?

Cooper,

This reminds me of the famous lament in the movie “Ship of Fools” (an even greater book by the famous American author Katherine Anne Porter) when Lee Marvin complains long & loudly to his alter ego the dwarf: “I never could hit the inside corner.” Referring of course to a baseball pitcher’s dilemma concerning throwing the ball over that particular part of home plate. The dwarf responds, “You know, millions of people lead perfectly useful & productive lives without even knowing or caring a whit about what the inside corner is.” Hardly a sin therefore not to have seen the Star Wars Trilogy; much better to spend time reading Dostoyevski, Yeats or Keats, while perhaps listening to Schubert or Bach. As Sir Francis Bacon wrote centuries ago, it is not good to spend too much time in the theatre.

Just some mundane thoughts of a Sunday morn on reading your latest.

Best,

john

Cooper,

Guess I’m almost as ‘bad’ since I only saw the Star Wars trilogy for the first time last year! And I have even less of an excuse since I was just 20 when the first movie came out!

But the funniest part is that, after seeing the first one, I tole my stepson (early 20s) that my favorite character in it was the old guy, meaning of course Obi-Wan… And the kid goes: “You mean Han Solo?” !!! Goes to show that everything on this earth, including age, is ralative!

Heh. I knew nothing of bands and all when I was younger, and I still struggle. When I was in high school a bunch of kids were talking about how Led Zeppelin was arrested for drugs and a show was canceled. I said, “Can’t they go on without him?”

I still am not always sure if a name is a band name or a person’s name. What can I say? grin
